The Experience of Social Rejection: Developmental Transformations and a Multimodal Art Response Model as Applied to Art-based Research

In this preliminary study, we propose an expressive and interactive research method using a developmental transformations (DvT) model multimodal art response as applied to art-based (ABR) design, specifically relating the experience of social rejection. We explored three questions: Can rejection be understood through playful interactions in DvT play? How does playing with vary solo play, play object, partner—i.e., otherness? do researchers’ responses participants enrich understanding? This study delineates subjective ways understanding lived approach, theory, practice ABR design. Four practitioners participated three-session pilot exploring on their own pairs, then shared experiences group discussion. Between sessions, researchers films visual participants. The outcomes suggest that impacts both individual partnered although its intensity seems increase pair interaction, supports participants’ exploration experience.
